The Detroit Guide
Detroit is not unfamiliar with change and reinvention, and yet for all its complexity, the Motor City is often primarily thought of as the land of automobiles. While this is undeniably a piece of Detroit’s fascinating narrative, the city has a great deal more to offer, particularly in the creative arts, which have long played a prominent role in Detroit’s past (from original urban murals to an iconic record label), and in continuing to shape the ever-changing city today.
Museums like MOCAD share the work of brilliant Detroit artists with natives and visitors alike, while also making the case that Detroit is a destination for a diverse, international range of art. Throughout the city, there are extraordinary examples of storied architecture. In rare record shops, music from earlier decades lives on, while contemporary indie bands play in a mix of new venues and old (outrageously awesome) dive bars.
Neighborhoods like Midtown (museum district, home to DIA and a transformed retail experience), Downtown (encompasses all of the city’s major stages from economic to operatic and athletic), and Corktown (a hipster dream) have seen waves of new chefs and restaurants come onto the scene.
Several new boutique hotels are promised to debut in the next year or two. So, while what in part makes Detroit cool is that it doesn’t have all the familiar amenities and trends of frequently touristed cities, it is undeniably a city of reinvention, and we expect this guide to evolve with it.

For the second year in a row, the Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA) presents Holy Mole! Mexican Mole Contest from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20 at Ste. Anne’s de Detroit Catholic Church located at 1000 Sainte Anne St., Detroit. The event celebrates the cooking talents of 15 pre-registered competitors who will each prepare their own rendition of homemade mole sauce, a hallmark of Mexican cooking and culinary symbol of the country’s mixed indigenous and European heritage.
“Last year’s Holy Mole! event was a tremendous success,” said SDBA President Kathy Wendler. “We had a standing-room-only audience that not only enjoyed the competition, but also appreciated the opportunity to purchase a variety of homemade foods and traditional products from local Latina entrepreneurs. This year, we anticipate more people joining us for this wonderful spotlight on Southwest Detroit’s Mexican culture and community.”
Mole is the national dish of Mexico and is most commonly served with meat. The mole is made to be the main focus of the meal, and is traditionally served during special occasions or festivities. The recipe can vary depending on which region it originates. On average, mole includes 28 ingredients and takes several hours to perfect.
Holy Mole! Mexican Mole Contest competitors will be judged on three categories: complexity of the recipe; overall flavor; and texture. Participants can receive up to five points for each individual category. Awards will be presented to the top three places and include: a $500 cash prize for the first place winner; a $250 gift certificate to E&L Supermercado for the second place winner; and a $150 gift certificate to Honey Bee Market – La Colmena for the third place winner.
The event is free of charge and spectators are encouraged to come and watch the contest unfold while enjoying traditional Mexican food items that will be available for purchase, including the mole sauce created by competitors for $10 by the half pound. In addition to the mole sauce, other traditional Mexican food items, such as tamales, empanadas and Mexican desserts, will be available for purchase.
“We are very pleased to have last year’s judges join us once again for the competition,” said Holy Mole! Event Coordinator Martina Guzman. “They include chef and proprietor of El Barzon Restaurant Norberto Garrita, Mexican historian and community activist Maria Elena Rodriguez, and chef and proprietor of El Asador Restaurant Luis Garza. In addition to our judges, we also would like to thank our many sponsors, volunteers and participants who make this event possible.”

Winter Magic Weekends kicks off on Saturday, November 19th! Themed holiday cocktail parties to enjoy with friends and family. 21+ event.
Autumn in Detroit would not be complete without a hayride through the trails and woods at People for Palmer Park's annual Harvest Festival. The free public event will be held on Saturday, October 22 from 1-4 pm. Originally set for an earlier October date, this event was re-scheduled due to inclement weather — this new date means the autumn colors in Detroit's Palmer Park will be much more vibrant and Halloween attire is welcome!
More than a century ago, Senator Thomas Palmer and his wife Lizzie Merrill Palmer would often invite guests to enjoy their Log Cabin Farm, drink freshly pressed apple cider, and enjoy the harvest. Palmer donated the land in the late 1800s to the city of Detroit to serve as a park "for the good of all."
In honor of the harvest and in celebration of the Palmer legacy, the area across from the Splash Park on Merrill Plaisance, adjacent to People for Palmer Park's community garden, will be filled with autumn festivities and free family fun.
Farmer John and his Barnyard Express show and petting zoo will return. Some of the season's bounty will be shared: apple tasting (with five different varieties of heirloom apples); free apple cider and donut holes for the first 500; corn grilling and pumpkin picking. Make a nature crown and decorate mini-pumpkin in PFPP's big blue art arts & crafts tent, and view a special squash display of a wide variety of pumpkins and squash that grow in Michigan. Then try your luck at tug-of-war, sack races and other old-fashioned games.
This will be a fun opportunity for all ages to learn about how our food is grown, the lives of farm animals, and nature in the park. Delicious, healthy food will be available from two new additions to the local food scene, the Nosh Pit Detroit food truck and organic baked treats from the Mason Jar. Bring-your-own picnics are also encouraged.
During Harvest Fest, learn about the very exciting Lake Frances Revival Project. People for Palmer Park, in partnership with the landscape architecture firm Conservation Design Forum, has been working on a plan to revitalize Lake Frances. The benefits of blue/green infrastructure and revitalization strategies for Palmer Park's Lake Frances will be discussed. This initiative is funded by The Kresge Foundation.
The event takes place next to Palmer Park's Splash Park and new playground, on Merrill Plaisance near Pontchartrain, between McNichols and Seven Mile Roads, west of Woodward Avenue. Parking is available at the Splash Park parking lot.
What: Harvest Festival with Petting Zoo, Farmer John Animal Shows and Hayride through the woods
When: Saturday, October 22, 2016, from 1 - 4 pm
Where: Palmer Park, by the Splash Park parking lot, Merrill Plaisance, west of Woodward between 6 & 7 Mile Roads, Detroit

Murals in the Market is a yearly festival in Detroit that peppers the city center with international street art. This year, 1010, Marka27, Felipe Pantone, Dabls, Paula Schubatis, Dessislava Terzieva, Sydney James, Ben Saginaw, Kevin Lyons, and more added splashes of color to the city's Eastern Market. Throughout 10 days in September, they opened up a trippy tunnel, introduced Native American icons, erected a textile chain-link fence intervention, and wrote "Detroit" many ways all over the urban cityscape.
There were tons of standouts, but some of our favorites included Pat Perry's heavily symbolic auto industry-themed marching band, Dabls' smash-up of mosaics and cave paintings, and a stunning collaboration by Mr. Jago and Xenz that looks like misty mountain lanscape attacked by Fauvists and inhabited by Surrealist monsters.

Flagstar Bank and Tour de Troit are once again joining forces to present Michigan’s largest cycling event on Saturday, September 17.
Attendance at the 15th annual ride is expected to exceed last year’s 7,500 cyclists. Since its inception in 2005, the Tour de Troit ride has raised more than $250,000 to support greenways and non-motorized transit projects in Detroit.
To celebrate this year’s event, Tour de Troit and Flagstar Bank are launching the Detroit Rides Detroit Sweepstakes on Monday, August 29. The Grand Prize winner will receive a Shinola Detroit Arrow bike, valued at $1,000. To enter, visit www.tour-de-troit.org/tourdetroitride
The Detroit Arrow is Shinola’s single-speed bicycle, streamlined for urban riding and hand assembled by bike specialists in Detroit. The bike is available in black and white color options, in both men’s and women’s frame styles.
Winners will be announced on September 9, just in time to ride the new bike in the Tour de Troit.
“This is Flagstar’s third consecutive year as presenting sponsor of the tour, and it just keeps getting better,” said Beth Correa, director of Community Affairs and Quality at Flagstar Bank. “We’re proud to sponsor an event that puts the spotlight on Detroit in such a positive way. Tour de Troit is a great partner—they not only promote a healthy lifestyle but also raise funds to make the city better for biking. It’s a win all around.” “
“Flagstar Bank is an important part of Tour de Troit,” said Vittoria Katanski, director, Tour de Troit. “Their support allows us to make a real difference in the city’s biking infrastructure while presenting a fun, safe ride for the community to enjoy.”
The starting location of this year’s ride is Roosevelt Park, 2200 Michigan Ave. in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. The 30-mile ride will begin at 9 a.m. and will pass through several city neighborhoods before concluding at Roosevelt Park. The 62-mile metric century ride for advanced riders will start between 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
“Our 15th anniversary is a real milestone,” said Kelli Kavanaugh, ride director, Tour de Troit. “Detroit has seen amazing growth as a bike city with the number of rides and events multiplying in the last decade-and-a-half. We’re proud to have been a catalyst to all this growth while remaining the leading ride in the state.”
Funds raised from the Tour de Troit have helped develop more than 17 miles of bike lanes as part of the Southwest Detroit Greenlink. Tour de Troit has also raised money for the Villages of Detroit Community Development Corporation, the Connor Creek Greenway and other non-motorized projects.
After the ride, cyclists will be treated to food from local restaurants, including Slows to Go and Organaman, beer from New Holland Brewing and entertainment from local bands. Tour de Troit registration includes one food ticket and one beverage ticket. Additional tickets are available for $5.
Registration and Cost
Registration for Tour de Troit is $50 through August 31; Sept. 1 to Sept. 9 $60; Sept. 10 to Sept. 17 $70. Registration often sells out so register early. The metric century is $60 until it sells out at 500 riders.
For registration and additional information, visit http://www.tour-de-troit.org
Registration is now available for Tour de Troit’s international Bike the Bridge ride, taking place Saturday, October 9, 2016. The ride is limited to 750 people, and a valid passport is required. Registration information is available on the Tour de Troit website.

The Belle Isle Conservancy is making a splash with the 12th annual Polish the Jewel Belle Isle Legacy Luncheon, presented by the DTE Energy Foundation, on Thursday, Oct. 13 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Funds raised at this year’s event will benefit a new Splash Play Area on Belle Isle Park.
After years of hosting the event at the Belle Isle Casino, the Conservancy is taking the celebration back to the garden – the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory gardens to be exact – where the first luncheon was held.
Hundreds of southeast Michigan’s most influential civic and business leaders – adorned in their favorite fascinators and chapeaus - are expected to attend for an afternoon of networking and mobile bidding at the luncheon’s silent auction. This year’s event is chaired by long-time Belle Isle supporter Denise Ilitch of Ilitch Enterprises.
New for 2016, guests will have the opportunity to win a one-of-a-kind pendant, created by Stephen Tapper of Tapper’s Diamonds and Fine Jewelry, called the Star of Belle Isle. After visiting the island with his nephew, Tapper was inspired to create a pendant that would reflect “just how precious the jewels of our great city are.”
Tickets (at $150 per person or $1,500 for a table of 10) are now available for purchase online at belleisleconservancy.org/polishthejewel or by calling 313-331-7760. Benefactor tickets (at $1,000, $500 or $300 giving levels) as well as corporate sponsorships are also available. Benefactor tickets will provide guests with exclusive access to a pre-Polish the Jewel celebration on Sept. 20.
The annual Polish the Jewel Belle Isle Legacy Luncheon began in 2004, then hosted by the Belle Isle Women’s Committee, which is today part of the Belle Isle Conservancy.

Work is moving along more quickly than expected on Detroit's Riverside Park.
The city gave three acres of the park in Southwest-Detroit to the owners of the Ambassador Bridge in a controversial deal last year. Detroit got five acres of land owned by the bridge company as part of the swap. That land will be used to expand the park.
Part of the deal called for the demolition of a former warehouse by late 2018. But that's underway now.

Bamboo Detroit is officially expanding to offer their first neighborhood co-working space, a pop-up space located at 14711 Mack Ave. inside of MASH Detroit called Bamboo East.
Bamboo East will offer affordable office space, a conference room, wi-fi, coffee, workshops and networking, Monday-Fridays beginning on August 15th. Bamboo East was created with the vision to be an access point connecting entrepreneurs coming from Grosse Pointe towards Downtown, and to better serve the growing Eastside business community.
"Co-working is a gateway to help bridge the resource divide in our communities,” said Director Nicole Mangis. “We see Bamboo East growing into a resource hub for our neighborhood entrepreneurs, freelancers, nonprofits, and remote workers. It takes a village, and Bamboo East can be a place for the village to come together to support one another."
Nicole Mangis is inspired to lead the initiative to help spread Bamboo’s mission of flexible office space and accessibility for entrepreneurs. Nicole Mangis is an entrepreneur herself having founded Brut Detroit, a pop-up wine bar, and previously consulting entrepreneurs through the Build Institute Co.Starters program and her consulting company Launch Exchange.
Bamboo East is piloted in partnership with MASH Detroit, a mixed-use venue that features shared retail, meeting and event space.
“It’s important for the same type of energy, quality, and experienced talent and resources found in places like Downtown and Midtown be extended to the rest of the city,” said Marlowe Stoudamire, Founder of MASH Detroit. “People should have an immediate place in their community to engage, grow and innovate. Adding a co-working space will help foster the next generation of collaboration, culture, and organic social collision that MASH is all about.”
Bamboo East will offer free open co-work days throughout the three month pop-up, workshops and lunches focused on business development, and also an inspiring series spotlighting local changemakers in neighborhoods of the city. Visit Bambooeastside.com for more information on the pop-up space and upcoming events.

The Belle Isle Conservancy is hosting Sunset at the Scott, an event to raise funds for the Scott Fountain Pewabic Tile Fund, in an effort to restore the historic Pewabic tile mosaic that once covered the basin of the James Scott Memorial Fountain.
Sunset at the Scott will take place on Wednesday, August 17 from 6:30PM-8:30PM on the Belle Isle paddock near the Scott Fountain.
The event will feature:
- El Guapo Fresh Mexican Grill
- Cool Jacks Handcrafted Ice Cream + Cookies
- Beer + Wine + Specialty cocktail
- Live entertainment provided by O N E F R E Q
“This promises to be a lovely evening celebrating the beauty of Belle Isle, and particularly the Scott Fountain,” said Michele Hodges, President of the Belle Isle Conservancy. “Our supporters are committed to the preservation of the original Pewabic tiles, and this event gives them a chance to help make that happen.”
To date, past supporters have helped the Belle Isle Conservancy raise nearly $75,000 towards the Scott Fountain Pewabic Tile Fund’s goal of $300,000 to complete the restoration.
The Belle Isle Conservancy continues to support its partnership with Pewabic Pottery with Pewabic on site at the event with limited edition Belle Isle tiles for sale. A portion of the proceeds from the Belle Isle tile series will be donated to the Scott Fountain Pewabic Tile Fund. The original tile mosaic was designed by Pewabic’s founder Mary Chase Perry Stratton and was removed from the fountain during a repair.
The event had previously been part of Pewabic Pottery’s annual house and garden show, but a scheduling conflict with another Belle Isle Conservancy event this year created the need for the event to take on an identity of its own with a new date and location.
Advance tickets for Sunset at the Scott range from $50-$250 and are available until August 1st. Admission is $65 at the door. Sponsorship opportunities are available. A recreation passport is required for admittance to the island.
For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.belleisleconservancy.org/sunset2016.
