In Detroit, Michigan, “the first sustainable urban agrihood” in the U.S. centers around an edible garden, with easily accessible, affordable produce offered to neighborhood residents and the community.

Each year, this urban farm provides fresh, free produce to 2,000 households within two square miles of the farm. They also supply food to local markets, restaurants, and food pantries.

The concept of agrihoods isn’t new —the Urban Land Institute estimated that about 200 agrihoods had been or were under construction across the U.S. — but this agrihood is unique because it’s the first truly urban agrihood. It plans to operate in a sustainable way and is more accessible than most other agrihoods.

Agrihoods, also called agritopias or community-supported development, are an exciting concept because they create a remarkable improvement to the dominant food system.

They help tackle food insecurity and other community problems. They make it easy for people in low-income communities to get fresh, healthy food. And they give people a connection with the food they eat, the earth, and each other.

All About The First Sustainable Urban Argihood

The first sustainable urban agrihood, which recently debuted in Detroit, is the project of the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative — an all-volunteer nonprofit, which seeks to empower urban communities using sustainable agriculture.

The three-acre development has vacant land, along with occupied and abandoned homes centered around a two-acre urban garden, with more than 300 organic vegetable varieties, like lettuce, kale, and carrots, as well as a 200-tree fruit orchard, with apples, pears, plums, and cherries, a children’s sensory garden, and more.

The nonprofit is also working on other projects that go beyond farming, including:

  • Turning a long-vacant building into a community resource center, which will offer educational programs, event and meeting space for the neighborhood, a nonprofit incubator, and two commercial kitchens
  • Developing a healthy food cafe, and
  • Restoring a home into student intern housing and an off-grid shipping container

BikingExpert.com looked at locations throughout the United States to find out which are the country’s most bike friendly cities.

Cities all over the world — especially Europe — are known for their bike friendliness. But, cities across the United States are making strides in ensuring that their streets are accessible and safe for cyclists. BikingExpert.com has compiled a list of the top 10 most bike friendly cities in the United States for EfficientGov.

Cycling is an incredibly beneficial exercise. Your whole body gets a workout, including your heart, and as a bonus, your exercise doubles as a form of transportation. When you rely on a bicycle instead of a car to commute, you can save money on gas, auto insurance, car payments and parking fees. You can feel good about using your own two legs to get around, reducing air pollution while experiencing the health benefits of biking. The following U.S. cities make it easy for residents to reap the many benefits of bicycle transportation.

#5 Detroit, Mich.

The city of Detroit supports efforts to promote bike tours. Dedicated bike lanes can be found around the city’s best attractions and other heavily trafficked areas, which provide safety as well as recreation for cyclists and tourists. In addition, public and private projects are underway to connect Detroit to other locations in Michigan and Canada, making it easier for cyclists to travel longer distances by bike.

Mind Body Green
By Dr. Joel Kahn

I was born in Detroit long ago and have since witnessed its strengths and weaknesses firsthand. I've worked in the city and surrounding suburbs for years, and have cared for its citizens in hospitals, clinics and my office practice.

And I can truly say that today, the spirit and pride in Detroit has never been higher. The greater Detroit area is tailor-made to be a wellness mecca, with its beautiful international waterways, parks and recreational areas to encourage a variety of outdoor activities. Here are some of the best places to pursue health and wellness in the Motor City and surrounding suburbs.

I get outside.

The Dequindre Cut is a former Grand Trunk Railroad line that is now a 20-foot wide paved path for walkers, runners and bikers. It was extended in the spring of 2016 to reach the Detroit Eastern Market and is crowded with families enjoy outdoor exercise. The urban artwork and graffiti provide a local color.

NetworkingOut is group that organizes runs and boot camps in the city with the goal of exercising the body while providing an opportunity to meet other people of similar spirit.

I try out local fitness classes.

Citizen Yoga has a center in Detroit and suburban Royal Oak and has developed a loyal following under the careful teaching of Kacee Must, who spent several years studying on an ashram in Pune, India. The lunchtime classes in Detroit give office workers an opportunity to get on and off their mat and back to work with better energy and mindfulness.

Detroit Body Garage led by Terra Castro is a former bank that has been transformed into a unique community fitness center that offers boot camps, children workshops, yoga, and community events. Castro recently opened her gym to a fun run led by Rich Roll to support healthy plant based nutrition in Detroit.

Flagstar Bank and Tour de Troit are once again joining forces to present Michigan’s largest cycling event on Saturday, September 17.

Attendance at the 15th annual ride is expected to exceed last year’s 7,500 cyclists. Since its inception in 2005, the Tour de Troit ride has raised more than $250,000 to support greenways and non-motorized transit projects in Detroit.

To celebrate this year’s event, Tour de Troit and Flagstar Bank are launching the Detroit Rides Detroit Sweepstakes on Monday, August 29. The Grand Prize winner will receive a Shinola Detroit Arrow bike, valued at $1,000.  To enter, visit www.tour-de-troit.org/tourdetroitride

The Detroit Arrow is Shinola’s single-speed bicycle, streamlined for urban riding and hand assembled by bike specialists in Detroit. The bike is available in black and white color options, in both men’s and women’s frame styles.

Winners will be announced on September 9, just in time to ride the new bike in the Tour de Troit.

“This is Flagstar’s third consecutive year as presenting sponsor of the tour, and it just keeps getting better,” said Beth Correa, director of Community Affairs and Quality at Flagstar Bank. “We’re proud to sponsor an event that puts the spotlight on Detroit in such a positive way. Tour de Troit is a great partner—they not only promote a healthy lifestyle but also raise funds to make the city better for biking. It’s a win all around.”  “

“Flagstar Bank is an important part of Tour de Troit,” said Vittoria Katanski, director, Tour de Troit. “Their support allows us to make a real difference in the city’s biking infrastructure while presenting a fun, safe ride for the community to enjoy.”

The starting location of this year’s ride is Roosevelt Park, 2200 Michigan Ave. in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. The 30-mile ride will begin at 9 a.m. and will pass through several city neighborhoods before concluding at Roosevelt Park. The 62-mile metric century ride for advanced riders will start between 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

“Our 15th anniversary is a real milestone,” said Kelli Kavanaugh, ride director, Tour de Troit. “Detroit has seen amazing growth as a bike city with the number of rides and events multiplying in the last decade-and-a-half.  We’re proud to have been a catalyst to all this growth while remaining the leading ride in the state.”

Funds raised from the Tour de Troit have helped develop more than 17 miles of bike lanes as part of the Southwest Detroit Greenlink. Tour de Troit has also raised money for the Villages of Detroit Community Development Corporation, the Connor Creek Greenway and other non-motorized projects.

After the ride, cyclists will be treated to food from local restaurants, including Slows to Go and Organaman, beer from New Holland Brewing and entertainment from local bands. Tour de Troit registration includes one food ticket and one beverage ticket. Additional tickets are available for $5.

Registration and Cost

Registration for Tour de Troit is $50 through August 31; Sept. 1 to Sept. 9 $60; Sept. 10 to Sept. 17 $70. Registration often sells out so register early.  The metric century is $60 until it sells out at 500 riders.

For registration and additional information, visit http://www.tour-de-troit.org

Registration is now available for Tour de Troit’s international Bike the Bridge ride, taking place Saturday, October 9, 2016. The ride is limited to 750 people, and a valid passport is required. Registration information is available on the Tour de Troit website.

The Project
Wolverine Human Services plans to build a community garden and training site that will be cultivated by the residents of the streets surrounding the Wolverine Center and the John S Vitale Community Center.

It will include the following key components:

  • A community garden with raised beds and paved pathways for growing herbs and vegetables that meets ADA Accessibility regulations.
  • A mixed-use structure that will be used as a neighborhood farmers' market retail space, a garden-training classroom, and for agricultural equipment storage.
  • The site will be well-lit and secured so that community members can work their garden plots in a safe and friendly environment.

Wolverine Human Services has been an institution in the Jefferson-Mack neighborhood for nearly 30 years and in that time, we have witnessed the deterioration of this neighborhood as residents have vacated the houses and businesses and other community institutions have closed their doors.

But here at Wolverine Human Services, we are committed to bringing new growth and innovation to this neighborhood by creating opportunities in the areas of education and vocational training to not only the young men in our care at the Wolverine Center, but also to the residents of the neighborhood that we have shared for three decades.

Detroit Receives $1M+ For Public Bike Share Program

Photo: DBusiness

Detroit will get more than $1 million to launch a public bike share program, one of 14 projects tapped to get federal funding in the region, according to the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments.

In addition to Detroit, Sterling Heights will see $650,000 for the Dodge Park Bridge over the Clinton River and Lake Orion will receive more than $263,000 for the Paint Creek Trail connection to the village's downtown.

Lisa Nuszkowski, executive director of Detroit Bike Share for the Downtown Detroit Partnership, said the program -- not to be confused with the system available to employees or affiliates of Dan Gilbert's companies downtown -- will likely begin with 350 bicycles at 35 stations around the greater downtown area. System details will not be finalized until after a vendor is selected, but users would likely be able to pay at the individual stations for daily or annual passes or something in between.

The system would be planned around the idea of short-distance trips to help keep more bikes in circulation with stations near transit stops and would not be designed to compete with bike rentals, Nuszkowski said.

Run Du Nain Rouge Returns Sunday, March 23rd

Displaying 3.RunduNainRouge.jpg

The Run du Nain Rouge returns to Detroit’s Cass Corridor on Sunday, March 23 as a pre-cursor to the annual Marche du Nain Rouge parade. Race participants can help run the monstrous Nain Rouge out of town during this 5K, which starts at 11 a.m at the corner of Cass and Canfield (501 W. Canfield Street).

Tour de Troit is proud to bring back the Run du Nain Rouge for its second year after 500 runners participated last year. Participants can register for the 5K at active.com; online registration is $35 through Thursday, March 20 but will rise to $40 on race day. Registration includes a t-shirt, and the top 15 finishers will be rewarded with a Nain Rouge-themed prize— while the slowest 10 will be punished with gifts selected by the red imp himself. Run times will be posted at www.runmichigan.org.

“We’re so excited to bring back this run,” said Vittoria Katanski, co-director, Tour de Troit. “We had such a great turnout for its inaugural year, that we just had to do it again. It’s such a fun event, especially because of all of the theatrics and enthusiasm that surrounds the Marche du Nain Rouge. We are happy to add to the tradition!”

Everyone is then encouraged to participate in the Marche du Nain Rouge, which begins immediately after the race. Named one of the 100 things you must do in Detroit in 2013 by HOUR Detroit, this spirited march will head down Cass Avenue and feature Detroiters in costumes warding off the evil Nain, who is rumored to have been haunting Detroit since 1701. The Marche will conclude at Cass Park, where revelers will banish the Nain Rouge and rid Detroit of its woes. For more details and updates on Marche du Nain Rouge festivities, visit www.marchedunainrouge.com.

Katherine Austin’s goal to “uplift Detroit’ in mind, body and spirit is the backdrop for Karma Yoga in The Park. A class that melds slow-flowing poses with the lush ambience of the breezy outdoors, Karma Yoga in the Park allows first-timers and yogi-veterans to gather together and form a community of like-minded people — while also receiving a “vibrational upgrade” in the middle of the workday.

Karma Yoga in the Park consists of four sessions in total and will take place on July 23rd, July 30th, August 6th and August 13th at Milliken State Park from 12 pm to 12:45 pm. The four sessions cost $55 in total. Those interested can register online by emailing info@karmayoga.net.

Austin opened Karma Yoga in 2003 and is certified in various yoga disciplines. Her suburban studio is packed every day of the week.

“Detroit is a city with heart and soul, and its flurry of entrepreneurial energy shows this perfectly. For a city that has endured hardship and a negative outside perception, the powerful harmony that yoga brings can be invaluable,” says Austin.

Milliken State Park is an urban park that showcases many features of Michigan’s natural beauty. A pocket of green in the bustling heart of Detroit, the park offers picnickers and explorers a quiet getaway from the smog of busy city life – much like how yoga offers its practitioners a peaceful break from hectic daily chaos.

Practicing outside will highlight the natural beauty of the city. Practicing together will amplify the powerful abilities available to a community when two or more are gathered!
