Kick off 8 Weeks Under 8 Mile by spending your day and your dollars in Southwest Detroit for Cinco De Mayo!

Rise and shine. Start your morning off right with breakfast at Steak Hut (1551 W Lafayette Blvd) or Duly’s Place (5458 W Vernor Hwy). Running late? Pick up a breakfast burrito at Evie’s Tamales (3454 Bagley St) or Honey Bee Market (2443 Bagley Street) with a top notch coffee from Cafe Con Leche (4200 W Vernor Hwy).

It’s game time. Next, join us as we kick off 8 Weeks Under 8 Mile, watching Detroit City FC kick off their inaugural season of minor league soccer with an 11am scrimmage versus the Latino All Stars at Historic Fort Wayne (6325 West Jefferson). Admission is free and is a great opportunity to support your new hometown team, check out the historic site, and cheer for Detroit’s youth in Think Detroit PAL’s weekly soccer games taking place on neighboring fields.

Post-game. After the game, head to PJ’s Lager House (1254 Michigan Ave) to celebrate with the team and its supporters, or hit up the street-filling fiesta in Mexicantown (Vernor and Bagley) to soak in the Cinco De Mayo fun.

Hungry? Escape the crowds and head west for a feast at El Naciemento (7400 W Vernor Hwy), Los Altos (7056 W Vernor Hwy), or Springwells’ famous Family Treat (2010 Springwells St) to name a few.

Off to the races. For evening fun, don’t forget about the Kentucky Derby (coverage begins at 5pm). We’ll be at the equestrian-themed Green Dot Stables (2200 W Lafayette Blvd) eating up their trademark new sliders and the watching the big race on the big screens. After the race, keep your night (and neighborhood spending) going with stops at the Black Horse Cantina (7844 W Jefferson Ave) or Abick’s (3500 Gilbert St).

On Thursday, May 17th 2012, Detroit4Detroit will host Crank Up the Cause at Bert’s Warehouse (2739 Russell St) from 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM. In partnership, event sponsor WDET is giving away $50,000 in free on-air promotions to Detroit4Detroit nonprofit community partners through their Vote For a Cause campaign.

Through May 13th, supporters can vote for their favorite Detroit4Detroit nonprofit to receive the first $25,000 of promotions by visiting WDET.org. The voting will culminate at Crank Up the Cause on May 17th, where attendees can cast their vote for the 2nd $25,000 up for grabs. Detroit4Detroit’s Crank Up the Cause is an event to celebrate local nonprofit organizations and the ordinary citizens doing extraordinary things to support them by leading a Detroit4Detroit project.

Crank Up the Cause will have great local music, food, and fun. But the people and community groups doing good are center stage. Tickets are $10, but that $10 is actually a donation and a WDET vote that the partygoer will give to one of the 20 nonprofits at the event. Attendees can support the following nonprofits — ACCESS, Brightmoor Alliance, COTS, DAPCEP, DRMM, Georgia Street Conservatory, Roosevelt Park, SER Metro Detroit, Summer in the City, The Empowerment Plan, Vanguard CDC, and Wellspring. Several more will be announced shortly.

Crank Up the Cause is co-hosted by WDET, Michigan Corps, 71 POP, Community Next, Detroit Harmonie, I Am Young Detroit, Imagine Detroit Together, Model D, NEW (Nonprofit Enterprise at Work), Ponyride and Texts From Last Night and The Collaborative Group. Tickets are immediately available at www.CUTCDetroit.eventbrite.com.

The Wallstreet Journal

S&P/Case-Shiller reported that its home-prices indexes reached new lows in February, though the pace of decline slowed amid other signs of stabilization.

The composite 20-city home price index, a key gauge of U.S. home prices, dropped 0.8% in February from the previous month and fell 3.5% from a year earlier compared to a 3.9% annual decline in the previous month. Just three cities posted monthly increases — Phoenix, Miami and San Diego.

Phoenix, Detroit, Miami, Denver and Minneapolis were the only cities to post positive annual growth rates. On a seasonally adjusted basis, which aims to take into account the slower selling season in the winter, things looked a little better. The overall 20-city index was up 0.2% from the previous month, and just seven cities posted monthly declines.

Though signs of stabilization are emerging heading into the key selling season, all markets aren’t created equal. “The regional divergence is still huge in this series which means that while some areas have bottomed the country as a whole is still at a volatile inflexion point,” said David Semmens of Standard Chartered PLC.

Below, see data from the 20 metro areas Case-Shiller tracks, sortable by name, level, monthly change and year-over-year change — just click the column headers to re-sort. The Case Shiller indices have a base value of 100 in January 2000. So a current index value of 150 translates to a 50% appreciation rate since January 2000 for a typical home located within the metro market.
