Vice President Joe Biden joined Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan today at ceremonies where 15 Detroit entrepreneurs earned Motor City Match grants to open or expand their business in the city.

Since the program was launched nearly two years ago, Motor City Match has distributed nearly $3 million in grant funds to more than 60 local businesses and assisted more than 570 entrepreneurs.  This sixth round of grant awards, totaling $600,000, is the largest amount ever offered in a single round since the program’s inception.

Every three months, Motor City Match connects new and expanding businesses with Detroit real estate opportunities and provides them with the funding and technical support needed to help them succeed.

“Vice President Biden and the Obama administration have been tremendous friends and supporters of the city of Detroit, so it’s great to have the Vice President in our city one more time to participate in this great event,” said Mayor Mike Duggan.  “The Motor City Match program is just one example of how federal support is helping Detroit to grow its economy by supporting its entrepreneurs.”

Motor City Match is funded with more than $7 million in federal community block grant funds distributed to Detroit, as well as with city funds approved by Detroit City Council and support from local foundations.

The program has helped to create a strong pipeline of businesses in various stages of development.  More than 570 entrepreneurs have received assistance through Motor City Match, including more than 60 that have received grant funds.  So far, 15 MCM businesses have opened or expanded and 17 more are under construction with openings expected in 2017.

Among the winning MCM businesses so far:
·        76% are minority owned
·        54% are minority-women owned
·        68% are women owned
·        62% of are owned by native Detroiters

In the program’s sixth round, grants ranged from $10,000 to $75,000 and winning businesses include:
·        Youth empowerment center
·        Artist’s incubator
·        Several restaurants and cafes
·        Custom furniture and housewares manufacturer
·        Metalsmithing and jewelry making studio
·        Bookstore
·        Massage therapy center

Among the Round 6 recipients is Karissma Pringle, a young designer and creator of precious and semi-precious metal jewelry, who will be opening a design and manufacturing studio in a Quonset hut in the True North art-centered development on Grand River Avenue. Pringle is a Detroit native who has grown an international reputation for her skills. She returned to Detroit to expand her business, which will include casting services for other jewelry designers and a retail space.  Her $35,000 grant will help with purchasing equipment and other startup costs.

As Motor City Match progresses into its second year, businesses are opening or expanding into neighborhoods that have seen very few new businesses open for a long time, said Mayor Mike Duggan. “Detroiters always have had an entrepreneurial spirit and Motor City Match is helping more of them to live out their dream to become their own boss and play a larger role in Detroit’s comeback.”

Along with grants, Motor City Match provides assistance to entrepreneurs who need help writing a business plan, finding a space or planning a renovation.  Other Round 6 award levels included the following:

·        50 Business Plan Awardees

·        26 Space Awardees

·        8 Design Awardees

Today’s awards presentation was held inside a Motor City Match winning business, which re-activated a vacant Detroit Police Department precinct headquarters into a training center and business hub. The Detroit School for Digital Technology (DSDT) is located in the old Detroit Police Department Third Precinct building. DSDT is a post-secondary school focused on 21st century media technologies, including video, graphic design, 3D printing and coding. Jamie Kothe, school director and CEO, was a Motor City Match Round 1 Space awardee and a Round 2 Cash awardee. Funds from the Cash award supported the renovation of the DSDT space.

“Motor City Match has exceeded our expectations and is quickly becoming a national model for how to revitalize neighborhoods through small business and support for diverse urban entrepreneurs.” said Detroit Economic Growth Corporation President and CEO, Rodrick Miller.

Applications are available on the first day of each financial quarter.  The next application window for building and business owners to apply to Motor City Match will be open from March 1, 2017 to April 1, 2017. Application details are available at www.MotorCityMatch.com.

The QLINE will depart the Penske Technical Center at approximately 9:35 am and reach the Warren Avenue station around 10:30 am. It will then be attached to a vehicle and towed the full 6.6-mile loop as part of the regular testing protocol. No passengers will be on board.

Lear's CEO Matt Simoncini and Mayor Mike Duggan

Lear Corporation (NYSE: LEA), a leading global supplier of automotive seating and electrical systems, opened a world-class Innovation Center today in downtown Detroit located at 119 State Street in historic Capitol Park.

At this Center, Lear plans to develop new automotive products and technologies, incubate non-automotive business opportunities, collaborate with the College for Creative Studies (CCS) on the next generation of automotive seating and vehicle interiors and work with the Wayne State University (WSU) School of Engineering to develop applications for connected cars and alternative energy vehicles.

Lear’s president and chief executive officer Matt Simoncini began the grand opening event by welcoming guests Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, WSU president Dr. M. Roy Wilson and CCS president Rick Rogers.

“We are very excited to be opening a new Innovation and Design Center in downtown Detroit,” said Matt Simoncini, President and CEO of Lear Corporation. “We plan to leverage the rapidly developing infrastructure in the Central Business District as well as the concentration of arts, science, and technology assets in the Capitol Park area to fully participate in the transformation that is underway in the automotive business and to take our Company to the next level.”

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan commented, "Lear's investment in this new center is another example of how Detroit is building on its history of innovation in automotive design.  Thanks to their partners at Wayne State University and the College for Creative Studies, Lear will be able to provide young Detroiters with practical hands-on experience to prepare them for careers in this cutting-edge field."
Planned as a hub for art, creativity, automotive advanced concept development and hands-on learning for Detroit college students, the building at 119 State Street will serve multiple purposes including focusing on innovation and design, inside and outside the automotive industry; working closely with nearby WSU and CCS; and supporting community organizations.

With almost 90% of its furniture designed or built in Detroit and other Michigan locations and featuring noted local graffiti artists, the Lear Innovation Center’s 35,000-square feet will include an open first floor gallery and showroom, modern office environments and work spaces designed to promote creativity as well as a rooftop garden for special events.

Lear purchased the historic (vintage 1887), six-story 119 State Street building located in the city’s resurging Capitol Park neighborhood last September.  It has been restored close to its original Victorian Romanesque exterior design, while interior renovations exude an industrial, raw, authentic Detroit style and aesthetic.

Trendy eyewear retailer Warby Parker is preparing to open a shop in downtown Detroit, filling another once-vacant storefront along Woodward Avenue.

The New York City-based company was issued a building permit last week for renovations to the ground-floor of 1449 Woodward. This retail space is between the Woodhouse Day Spa and the newly opened Kit + Ace store.

Started in 2010, Warby Parker designs and sells eyeglasses and sunglasses that are typically priced between $95 and $145. The company began as an online-only retailer and has since opened over 30 actual shop locations. Warby Parker's eyewear was initially associated with a "hipster" aesthetic and acquired a broad audience as its popularity grew.

A Warby Parker representative on Tuesday confirmed that the company is planning a Detroit location. The store is to open sometime later this year.

Hatch Detroit is pleased to announce the 2015 Comerica Hatch Detroit Contest winner, Live Cycle Delight, will open its new cycle studio this fall located at 8019 Agnes St. in Detroit’s West Village. Live Cycle Delight will be the fourth contest alumni to locate in the West Village area and the first contemporary indoor cycling studio in Detroit.

“Live Cycle Delight will be the contest’s 15th business to establish a brick and mortar location in metro Detroit,” said Vittoria Katanski, executive director, Hatch Detroit. “From bakers to brewers to a kayak rental company, and now the first cycling studio in Detroit, this contest brings together a unique group of business entrepreneurs who will continue to make Detroit’s independent retail standout.”

Live Cycle Delight will offer three types of indoor cycling classes ranging from 30- to 90-minute sessions with varying intensity levels. TRX conditioning classes will be scheduled daily between cycling classes to complement the cardio-intensive cycling. These conditioning classes target the body’s core strength and flexibility to improve balance and reduce injury risk during bike rides. Additionally, the company encourages outdoor bike rides by offering meet-up rides as an introduction to outdoor cycling safety, promoting cycling hubs throughout Detroit and continuing to expose Detroit as a bike friendly community.

Live Cycle Delight will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and plans to offer monthly memberships as well as student and corporate packages. For those thinking about testing the pedals, single spin classes and TRX Drop-in Delight classes will be offered as well.

The company will also feature a state-of-the-art Bike Lounge encouraging outdoor riders to make Live Cycle Delight a start, stop or in-between ride destination. The Bike Lounge will have a tire pump station, lockers, Wi-Fi and water provided free for all members and class participants. Part of Live Cycle Delight’s Bike Lounge, will be a hydrate station filled with cold-pressed juices and healthy snacks available for purchase.

Visionary entrepreneurs looking to follow the tracks of Live Cycle Delight have until July 15 to submit applications for the 2016 Comerica Hatch Detroit Contest, presented by Opportunity Detroit, for a chance to win $50,000 from Comerica Bank, and more than $200,000 in pro bono services including a $25,000 branding and design package from GTB (formally Team Detroit), a 30-second social media advertisement from MCCI, legal services from Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn and a package of accounting, IT, public relations support, and counsel from Hatch Detroit and its partners.

As presenting sponsor, Opportunity Detroit will host the Top 10 Announcement Party and the Hatch Off event to declare the 2016 contest winner determined by public vote and a live pitch to a panel of judges on Aug. 26.

Applicants looking to perfect their application before submitting to the contest are encouraged to register for one of the two remaining business planning workshops on June 29 or July 7 by visiting http://hatchdetroit.com/submission-workshops/. Complete submission guidelines and contest rules are available on www.HatchDetroit.com.

“When the top 10 Comerica Hatch Detroit Contest semi-finalists are announced they instantly become part of the Hatch Detroit family,” said Katanski. “For many of the top 10, the contest is their introduction to the public and is a great way for them to gain visibility, public support and support of other potential investors.”

The contest has garnered 1,400 business submissions with a combined 300,000 public votes that helped crown Hugh, La Feria, Batch Brewing Company, Sister Pie and Live Cycle Delight as contest winners, and assisted 14 other business storefronts in the cities of Detroit, Highland Park and Hamtramck since 2011.

Comerica more than doubled its commitment for the 2016 contest, investing an additional $50,000 to help launch even more small business successes in Detroit and contributing $25,000 to the Michigan Women’s Foundation to establish a micro-enterprise loan fund offered exclusively to Hatch Alumni to help them meet short-term funding challenges.

"This Old House" will head to Detroit for the first time to help a retired firefighter and his family renovate their home in the Russell Woods neighborhood in the northwest area of the city.

The renovation project in Detroit will span 10 episodes that are scheduled to air in March. The Public Broadcasting Service television show has plans to renovate additional homes in Detroit, with more details to be announced in the coming weeks.

"There are some amazing housing stories in Detroit," John Tomlin, senior producer for "This Old House," told Crain's Detroit Business. "We heard beautiful stories of people working hard to improve their homes and we wanted to ... be a part of telling the story."

Tomlin said the producers of This Old House chose the Detroit project because they liked the family and "the house had some potential."

"We went through a lot of abandoned houses doing our research," he said. "A lot of them are borderline. You're not sure that the homeowners can finish it."

The two-story brick home was built in 1939 and was owned by the Detroit Land Bank Authority. The family recently purchased the home at auction and is required to rehabilitate the property and live in the house under the terms of the authority's auction program.

A new facility in Detroit will become Michigan State University’s first center for studying and developing urban food systems.

Drawing on experience from MSU’s 13 rural AgBioResearch field stations and MSU Extension work in every county of Michigan, the MSU/Detroit Center for Urban Food Systems will facilitate best practices for food and non-food plant production and a variety of related community support activities.

“The food systems center reflects Michigan State’s commitment to the people of Detroit and drive to bring our pioneering work in food systems into the urban environment,” MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon said.

A proposed Detroit neighborhood site is under consideration and will be announced once land use review and community outreach are completed. Michigan State has earmarked $300,000 to launch the project and anticipates ongoing support from state and federal sources.

MSU currently has 59 full-time Extension staff in Detroit and Wayne County in five offices, and will staff the proposed center as program needs dictate. Staff will work with residents to optimize plant health and productivity, handle land contamination issues and connect entrepreneurs with markets and networks.

New York. Portland. San Francisco. Seattle. The debate rages on about the most innovative city in America. But if Google parent company Alphabet has its way, there soon may be a new contender.

Sidewalk Labs, which Google created last June and has since spun off as a subsidiary--is reportedly scouting locations to build an entire city, a highly connected utopia that will make the aforementioned cities look obsolete. Think: self-driving cars, high-speed Wi-Fi, internet of things-enabled everything.

According to The Information, the Denver and Detroit areas, so far, look like the frontrunners. Sidewalk Labs has consulted with more than 100 urban planning experts and forward thinkers, such as Anthony Townsend, research director of Institute for the Future. Sidewalk Labs already has some heavy-hitting city planners in its own ranks, including its CEO, Dan Doctoroff, a former New York City deputy mayor.

Google created Sidewalk Labs to confront the problems plaguing cities: traffic congestion, pollution, lack of public transportation, limited connectivity, to name a few. Its mission statement is to "accelerate innovation in cities around the world." What could that mean? Maybe a city with exclusively self-driving cars, clean energy sources, world-class transit hubs, and high-speed wireless, for starters.
