The Wins for Warriors Foundation (W4WF), a nonprofit organization founded by Detroit Tigers All-Star pitcher Justin Verlander, today announced the charity has relocated its headquarters to Chrysler House at 719 Griswold Street in downtown Detroit. The group's new offices are located on the eighth floor of the historic skyscraper owned and managed by Bedrock Real Estate Services.

Founded in 2013, Wins for Warriors supports veterans and their families through several best-in-class programs. The organization’s mission is to advocate for and invest in resources that enable veterans and their families to lead resilient lives.

"Locating my foundation's offices in the heart of downtown Detroit reinforces my commitment to the city of Detroit and all the great things that are happening in the city," said Justin Verlander.

To date, the Foundation has funded numerous veteran programs supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of veterans and their families.

"We have a great working relationship with Justin and it's exciting to see how he's giving back to veterans in our community," said Dan Mullen, Executive Vice President of Bedrock Real Estate Services. "On a personal note, my dad is a Vietnam veteran so Wins for Warriors really strikes a chord with me. We are proud to welcome this important organization to Chrysler House."

The new location puts Wins for Warriors in the heart of Detroit's urban core, surrounded by passionate, likeminded businesses. The Quicken Loans family of companies holds veterans in high regard and works to enhance their quality of life through veteran-related nonprofit sponsorships, the Quicken Loans Veteran Hiring Program and VA Loans.

Originally built in the early 1900’s to house Dime Savings Bank, Chrysler House was renamed in 2011 when the automaker moved into the building. In addition to Wins for Warriors, other signature tenants include Chrysler Group, Quicken Loans, dPOP!, Dime Store Restaurant, Bon Bon Bon, DROUGHT juice, and Mike's Kabob Grille.

The Rays traded David Price to the Tigers yesterday. Price handled the situation well, tweeting a message of thanks to the Tampa fans. The Tampa FOX affiliate was not nearly as gracious, though:

The FOX affiliate in Detroit had spectacular comeback, though:

Detroit Tigers players, including Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander and Tori Hunter, pose in their Zubaz outfits May 18, 2014.

Sports teams often adopt fashion styles, a way for the players to bond. Baseball’s Detroit Tigers are finding unity through flashy retro attire – Zubaz.

Zubaz, clothing featuring colorful Zebra-like stripes, were popular during the early 1990s, especially for athletes. But eventually the fad ended, and people went back to wearing solid-colored pants and shorts and bandannas, and the world became a duller place.

The Tigers are reveling in Zubaz fashion, making the clothing a locker-room necessity. It started with pitcher Joba Chamberlain, who bought pairs and pairs of Zubaz at the beginning of the month, right around the time the team held a “Zubazpalooza” event for fans.

1. He was a winner. No matter where he went.

The uniform may have changed a few times over the course of his 27-year managerial career, but Jim Leyland’s facial expression and ability to turn talent into a team certainly hasn’t. He won NL Manager of the Year twice with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He won the 1997 World Series with the Florida Marlins merely five years after the expansion team came into existence. And he helped a Detroit Tigers franchise that hadn’t had a winning season in over a decade become one of MLB’s elite teams. He is 15th in all-time wins and a coaching legend — and we’re running low on legends.

2. No one gets ejected like Jim Leyland anymore.

11 Reasons Baseball Is Going To Seriously Miss Jim Leyland

Getting thrown out of a baseball game is an art form, and Leyland was a master at it. He stood up for his players and his team even when he knew he was wrong. Leyland’s tantrums have earned him a spot on the Mount Rushmore of hot-headed managers alongside Bobby Cox and Lou Pinella.

Major League Baseball is pitching a plan to bring the game back to the site of the old Tiger Stadium, although its vision for a MLB Urban Youth Academy at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull faces financial hurdles and lacks support from a key city official.

Darrell Miller, the league’s vice president of youth and facility development, said Monday that his office is considering several possible Detroit locations for an academy, particularly the old stadium grounds. He declined to identify the other possible sites.

The academy would provide free year-round baseball and softball instruction for youngsters and involve the construction of ballfields, indoor facilities, batting cages and offices.

Major League Baseball has built four such academies in Houston, New Orleans, Puerto Rico and Compton, Calif. Three other locations are under development in Cleveland, Philadelphia and Hialeah, Fla. Major League Baseball says more than 10,000 youngsters have attended its academies since the first site opened in Compton in 2006. Nearly 350 academy participants have gone on to play collegiate baseball or softball, and close to 200 have been chosen in the MLB’s First-Year Player Draft.

Miller said the league would like to establish youth academies in or near every city with a major league team.

He said it’s too early to put a price tag on a Detroit proposal, but said academies typically cost $3 million to $6 million. Major League Baseball will contribute a portion of the necessary investment — but not all. In January, Commissioner Bud Selig committed the league to a $1.5-million investment for a planned Reds MLB Urban Youth Academy in Cincinnati.
